Brunello di Montalcino is a wine produced in the Montalcino area of Tuscany, Italy. The region is characterized by rolling hills, rich soil, and a Mediterranean climate, all of which contribute to the unique character of the wine. The area has been producing wine since the Middle Ages, and today is known as one of Italy's premier wine regions.
The production area of Brunello spans approximatley 24,000 ha (15% of which covered in vineyards) and the yearly production according to the Consortium is around 8 million bottles of wine produced from 2,100 ha of vineyards registered as Brunello.
The history of Brunello di Montalcino dates back to the 19th century when local winemakers began experimenting with the Sangiovese grape. In 1888, Ferruccio Biondi-Santi created the first modern Brunello di Montalcino, using a selection of Sangiovese clones that he had isolated and cultivated. The wine quickly gained popularity, and in 1966, the Brunello di Montalcino DOC was established to regulate the production of the wine.
Brunello di Montalcino is a red wine made from 100% Sangiovese grapes. The wine is characterized by its intense ruby red color, complex aromas of dark fruit and spice, and a robust, full-bodied flavor. The wine is aged for a minimum of two years in oak barrels, followed by at least four months of bottle aging before release (no sooner than five years from production). Brunello di Montalcino is considered one of Italy's finest wines and is highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts around the world.
