Chianti Classico is a picturesque region located in the heart of Tuscany, Italy. The zone amounts to 71,800 hectares (177,500 acres) and includes the entire territories of the municipalities of Castellina in Chianti, Gaiole in Chianti, Greve in Chianti and Radda in Chianti and parts of those of Barberino Tavarnelle, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Poggibonsi, San Casciano Val di Pesa.
Renowned for its rolling hills, scenic vineyards, and historic towns, the area is a popular destination for wine lovers and tourists alike. The region's signature wine, Chianti Classico, is made from Sangiovese grapes and boasts a fruity aroma and a robust, tannic structure. The yearly production ranges around 35 million bottles of wine per year. The area also produces a limited amount of white and rosé wines, as well as olive oil.
The name Chianti Classico refers to the Italian wine area defined by the Grand Ducal decree of 1716 in which the boundaries of the wine production area and the specifications of the wine were established for the first time in Tuscany, effectively protecting its quality.
The first mention of Chianti wine dates back to the 14th century, and the wine quickly gained popularity throughout Italy and beyond. In 1924 the Chianti Classico Consortium was formed to regulate the production of the wine and protect its quality. Today, Chianti Classico is recognized as one of Italy's premier wine regions, known for its superb Sangiovese wines and stunning landscapes.
