Trentino-South Tyrol
Vineyards, wineries and cellars for sale in Trentino-South Tyrol
Trentino-South Tyrol is a predominantly mountainous region characterised by wines of high quality and considerable depth thanks to the special microclimates in the valleys at the foot of the mountains. Grape varieties such as Sauvignon and Pinot Noir find the ideal environment to flourish, and typically Trentino varieties such as Teroldego, Schiava, Gewürztraminer and Lagrein are worldwide famous. Trentino's vineyards extend over some 15,000 hectares, almost entirely on mountain slopes (86%), and annual production is around 1,100,000 bottles of wine.
Viticulture in Trentino has ancient origins, certainly dating back to Etruscan and pre-Roman times, and experienced a period of crisis throughout the Middle Ages, when it was kept alive almost exclusively by the monks in the abbeys. Starting in the 1970s, local farmers resumed working the vineyards, preferring quality over quantity.
Trentino currently has 9 DOC and 4 IGT wines, all obtained from typical Trentino grapes such as Gewürztraminer, Teroldego, Lagrein, Nosiola, Pinot Noir (which prefers higher altitude soils with colder climates), Moscato Giallo and Moscato Rosa. These grapes are often used in blends with international varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to create wines with special aromas and unique taste. The special soil and climate conditions make Trentino's white wines among the best in Italy.
