Umbria IGT is a designation used for wines produced in the Umbria region, located in central Italy. The IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) classification is used for wines that do not meet the strict requirements for DOC or DOCG status, but are still made from grapes grown in the designated vineyard production area. The Umbria IGT production area covers the entire region of Umbria, and includes a wide variety of grape varieties and wine styles. The region is characterized by a hilly landscape, with a mix of clay, limestone, and volcanic soils, and a Mediterranean climate. The vineyards are mainly located on the slopes of the hills, at an altitude between 200 and 500 m above sea level, and are exposed to the south and southeast.
Umbrian wines are known for their diversity and quality, as the designation allows for a wide range of varieties and styles. The most used grapes for Umbria IGT wines are Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Pinot Noir for red wines, and Grechetto, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Trebbiano for white wines. The wines can be made as varietal or blended wines, and can be produced as still, sparkling, or dessert wines. The total surface area of the vineyards in the Umbria IGT production area is about 4,000 hectares, with a total production of about 200,000 hl of wine per year. The production is carried out by about 800 winegrowers and 30 wineries, which produce a wide range of high-quality wines. Umbria IGT wines are known for their elegance, complexity, and balance, and they are excellent accompaniments to a variety of foods, including pasta, meat, cheese, and vegetables.
